Our Story

esstuary fis was established in Kuching in 2019 with a clear purpose: to address the growing gap between traditional financial advice and the real-world challenges people face in managing their finances. We saw that many individuals felt overwhelmed by complexity, frustrated by systems that did not work in practice, and uncertain about how to plan across different life stages.

Our founder, Dr. Lina Chong, spent over a decade working in financial services before recognizing that the industry often focused on products rather than education, and on theory rather than practical application. After completing research in behavioural economics and adult learning, she designed a curriculum that combines psychological insights with structured methodology to help participants build sustainable financial practices.

Since opening, we have worked with over 600 individuals across Sarawak, helping them simplify their financial structures, develop effective budgeting systems, and design long-term frameworks that adapt as their lives change. Our approach emphasizes understanding over prescription, sustainability over quick fixes, and personal agency over dependency on external advice.

We continue to refine our workshops based on participant feedback and emerging research in behavioural science, financial planning, and adult education. Our commitment is to provide education that respects your intelligence, addresses real challenges, and delivers practical value you can implement immediately.

Our Values and Approach

At esstuary fis, we believe effective financial education requires more than information transfer. It demands understanding of how people actually make decisions, respect for the complexity of real life, and recognition that sustainable change happens through practice rather than prescription.

We design workshops to address the gap between what people know they should do and what they actually do. This means incorporating insights from psychology about habit formation, decision-making under uncertainty, and motivation maintenance. It also means acknowledging that perfect theoretical solutions often fail in practice because they do not account for human behaviour, competing priorities, or unexpected circumstances.

Our methodology emphasizes building systems that work with your natural tendencies rather than requiring constant willpower. We help you identify friction points in your current approach, design choice architecture that supports better decisions, and create frameworks that adapt as your situation changes. This approach has proven more sustainable than rigid rules or one-size-fits-all templates.

We maintain a non-judgemental learning environment where participants can discuss challenges openly without feeling assessed or criticized. Financial management involves personal values, past experiences, and family dynamics that deserve respectful consideration. Our role is to provide tools and insights, not to impose external standards of what your financial life should look like.

Quality education requires ongoing refinement. We collect detailed feedback after every workshop, track participant outcomes over time, and adjust our curriculum based on what proves most valuable. We also stay current with research in behavioural science, financial planning methodology, and adult education to ensure our approach reflects best practices.
